Link Protection Card

Optical Link Protection Card for Fiber Protection, Bi-directional protection in SMF, 1RU Rack Chassis

Link protection helps to ensure that traffic going over a specific interface to a neighboring router or switch can continue to reach this router (switch) if that interface fails. When link protection is configured for an interface and an LSP that traverses this interface, backup tunnel is created that will handle this traffic if the interface fails. This enables all traffic carried by LSPs that traverse a failed link to be rerouted around the failure. The reroute decision is completely controlled locally by the router interfacing the failed link.

F-tone’s FT-OLP-C is a link protection card. It can be installed into FT-P-OTP800 series transport platform for more capacity solution in limited environment. If a link-protected interface fails, traffic is quickly switched to the Backup tunnel. Backup tunnel uses a different interface and path to reach the same destination. The path used can be configured explicitly, or you can rely on CSPF.

Note that OLP should be used in pairs and a backup tunnel cannot share the same egress interface with the LSPs it monitors.

Protection Illustration

It shows an example of how you can implement link protection based on 1+1 protection operation. In 1+1 operation, a splitter bridge sends the Tx signal to both line (the main line and the backup line) and a 2x1 selector switch selects the signal from one of the line. In default mode, traffic from the main line is selected. When link failures, the selector near the Rx side of the failed traffic detects the failure, switches over, and selects the traffic from the backup line.

It shows an example of how you can implement link protection based on 1:1 protection operation. The 1:1 protection adopts 2x2 optical switch technologies. If the link between two transmission equipment fails, traffic is quickly switched to the backup line generated by link protection.
